Reading a truss: Pratt, Howe and Warren
In a Pratt truss the diagonals slope down towards the middle and work in tension; the verticals take compression.
A Howe truss flips that arrangement, which suited timber diagonals with iron rods for verticals.
A Warren truss drops the verticals entirely and alternates the diagonals, giving a row of triangles.
